"My Life - My Dreams" An integration of
Accelerate Education, Authentic Learning, and SEL
2020-2021 School year, I taught 3rd grade virtually to students in Pennsylvania with Accelerate Education. AE is a company that services the educational needs of public school students around the country. At the time, AE did not have a curriculum developed for Synchronous Weekly Zoom Small Group Meetings. I created my curriculum by taking parts of the second-semester 3rd-grade curriculum and pieced them together into a logical flow and personal project that I called "My Life, My Dreams." Students received credit for the pieces they did on the current curriculum.
The goal of the "My Life, My Dreams" project is for students to create an mp4 video produced at the end of the project that was a reflection of their life unto today and their dreams for tomorrow. The video would be created using ppt or Google Docs slides and Zoom recording to produce an mp4. Students would create a ppt slide show that outlines a timeline of their life until today, with a vision of their future dreams and goals for their lives. Students will research their dream careers. They will also outline other dreams they have for their life and include them in their presentation of "My Dreams." The project covers AE curriculum modules and I integrated SEL into the project.
"My Life - My Dreams"
The integration of SEL into Accelerate Education Curriculum
Self Awareness: Students better understand who they are, their talents, and values to discover their own dreams.
Responsible Decision-making: In the dream portion of the project identify how they want to contribute to the world.
Relationship Skills: Work in small groups to build relationships with classmates throughout the project.
Social Awareness and Self Management: In Zoom, they listened and provide feedback to each other.
Authentic Learning Examples
•Research and writing
•Character analysis of themselves
•Drawing and writing about a story or chapter
•Journal entries (reflective writing)
•Discussion partners or groups
•Student self-assessment
•Peer assessment and evaluation
•Presentations
•Projects
•Portfolios
•Tiered learning classrooms
Teachers offer tier learning, so students are working at different levels on the same task, some more difficult and challenging than others.
